OutWest sponsored London Titans FC are holding a fundraising event to help them get to the Gay Games in Cologne.
Built upon the principles of Participation, Inclusion, and Personal Best, since 1982 the Gay Games have empowered thousands of LGBT athletes and artists through sport, culture, and fellowship. The mission of the Federation of Gay Games is to promote equality through the organisation of the premiere international LGBT and gay-friendly sports and cultural event known as the Gay Games. Held every four years this year's Gay Games VIII will be held in Cologne and will feature 12,000 participants from over 70 countries competing in 35 athletic and five cultural disciplines. Previous games have seen athletes from countries including Iraq, Pakistan, and the United Arab Emirates. Openly gay Olympic diving gold medallist Matt Mitcham, one of the few openly gay Olympians, will be attending to lend his support.
The costs of attending the games are borne entirely by the participants and to support as many people as possible being able to attend this unique and important event, the London Titans Football Club, who will be attending the World Gay Games for the first time, has set a target of subsiding each attendee by £100. We are already on our way to achieving this target through generous sponsorship by Warner Brothers LGBT group and sales of our 2010 promotional calendar. The fundraiser to be held at our sponsoring venue, West5 in Ealing, on Sunday 30th May will raise the majority of the remainder.
As it's a Bank Holiday the next day, why not come down to join us in supporting this wonderful club!

DoH: Cancer awareness: the impact of sexual orientation
This DoH report focuses solely upon cancer. There are, of course, many other health issues. As one example, THT are currently encouraging supporters to urge General Election candidates to pledge "to support better public health in the UK through earlier diagnosis of HIV and sexual ill health and by improving public understanding of the issues".

Cancer awareness: the impact of sexual orientation
22nd March 2010
...
Conclusions and Recommendations
1.22 Conclusions
1.22.1 The findings indicate that some differences in cancer awareness by sexual orientation do exist, although they do not always present a clear pattern or picture.
1.22.2 Overall, the results suggest that gay and bisexual people tend to be slightly more aware of cancer issues (both signs and symptoms, and risk factors) than heterosexual people. This is particularly the case with men, among whom it was consistently gay men or bisexuals who were better informed where there was any significant difference. Among women, the pattern was less clear than with men, but nevertheless it tended to be the case that lesbians or bisexual women were more aware than were heterosexual women, where differences existed.
1.22.3 It has already been identified that young people are generally less knowledgeable about cancer. The results show that, among men, differences between sexual orientation groups occur predominantly in the younger age group and level out to some extent by the time men reach the 40+ group. For women however, there continue to be significant differences among the older age group.
1.22.4 In line with having greater awareness of cancer, gay and bisexual people were generally more likely than heterosexuals to anticipate presenting promptly if they experienced a sign or symptom. However the pattern was different among older women, where heterosexual women were generally most likely to anticipate prompt presentation. Among men, heterosexuals were generally more likely to perceive barriers to presenting with a symptom. Among women, older bisexuals were particularly likely to perceive barriers. There may be a need to do more to address barriers for these groups in particular.
1.22.5 Younger gay men were significantly more likely to consider lifestyle the most important contributing factor, compared with heterosexual and bisexual men. This suggests that existing messages on lifestyle may have been better received by gay men than other groups, and there may be a need to do more to inform heterosexual and bisexual men in this age group. However this does not apply to older men, for whom there was not a significant variation.
1.22.6 It is important to emphasise that, while there were a few quite large variations between groups, the majority of the differences, although statistically significant, were not very large. There are many more results where no significant difference exists, and the general pattern of the charts shows a high degree of similarity overall. While it appears that there is some relationship between sexual orientation and cancer awareness, it is likely to be much less important than various other factors such as age and gender, which have already been considered elsewhere.
1.23 Key recommendations
Interventions aimed at improving awareness of cancer signs and risk factors should take particular account of younger heterosexual people, particularly men, who tend to be slightly less informed in general than gay and bisexual people.
Promotion of early help-seeking may wish to focus on heterosexual men, as this group perceived more barriers to help-seeking, and were less likely to report that they would present promptly.
Older lesbians and bisexual women may also benefit from more promotion of help-seeking, since heterosexual women in this age group were consistently more likely than the other groups to say they would present promptly, while bisexual women were much more likely to perceive barriers.
Awareness of the importance of lifestyle as a risk factor for cancer could be promoted particularly among younger heterosexual and bisexual men, and among older lesbians and bisexual women, since younger gay men and older heterosexual women were most likely to recognise this. read more...
Film screening, 16th May -- "Suddenly Last Winter"
GALHA NEWS RELEASE - SCREENING OF GAY FILM FOR UK “PROTEST THE POPE” CAMPAIGN.
www.lidf.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/suddenly-last-winter1.jpg
The Gay and Lesbian Humanist Association (GALHA) has announced an exclusive screening of the film “Suddenly Last Winter” on the evening of May 16th to mark the International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHO), courtesy of Network Releasing before the film is released on DVD on 7th June. The Directors of the film, Gustav Hofer and Luca Ragazzi, will be present at the event and will talk about their experience of making the film.
“Suddenly last Winter” is the story of Gustav and Lucca, whose lives change when the Italian Government presents a draft law that would give rights to unmarried gay couples, prompting a wave of homophobia in Italy. The Vatican and conservatives fight against it, preaching that the end of morality and the family are nigh if the legislation on civil unions is not blocked. Together for over eight years, the film shows Luca and Gustav trying to understand the different positions and undertaking a journey into a country they did not know before and did not expect to find: “their own”. The film is being shown before its official release in the UK and following several awards it has received around the world.
Derek Lennard, UK Coordinator of IDAHO said “With the Pope set to visit the UK on an official visit in 2010, this moving and heart warming documentary is a timely reminder of the negative effects that religious influence in politics can have on people’s lives, and the homophobia and bigotry it helps spread”.
The International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia will be marked on May 17th in over 50 countries. Its theme this year is “Religions, Homophobia and Transphobia”.
